Do Self-Driving Cars Have A Future In South Africa?

The pessimists among us will likely say no, followed by a mumbling “taxi drivers would have a thing or two to say about that”. But many amongst us are hopeful, positive even! Could you imagine self-driving cars zooming about Andries Potgieter Boulevard?

According to the Automotive Future Now Report, a document outlining the study fielded by Innovation Group South Africa, self-driving cars most definitely have a place in the South African society. Here’s a couple of reasons why:

  1. Africa is the globe’s ‘last market’. It’s where small businesses can grow, and with such unlimited expansion, there is more than enough room for facilitative policy and business that will allow driverless […]

5 Ways To Make Friends In Uni!

We thought we’d compile a short list of ways you can get in touch with some of the guys and gals around you in varsity. As a research faculty we’ve been around campuses enough to realise how isolated a student or researcher can feel when he/she is not socialising, and before you say ‘hey, this has nothing to do with research and academics’, think again. Depression and anxiety, exacerbated by student isolation, is one of the reasons why students flop, especially when a student is conducting postgraduate research. So instead of throwing on the earphones and playing Kendrick Lamar all alone in your digs, get to know some of the people around […]

3 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Dropping Out

We’re well past the midyear point, and with the second-semester heating up a lot of students both undergrad and postgrad are feeling the pressure and stresses associated with their degrees. Whether the workload is too heavy, or you are struggling to grasp the concepts within a particular field of study, those of you that are struggling may begin to wonder whether dropping out of university is a possible solution. Before you do anything as rash as quitting your studies, take a look at these three questions you should ask yourself.

1) Have I Made My Studies Any Easier?

Many postgraduate researchers believe that they are capable of completing a rather tedious and […]

Is There A Need For Venture Creation In Universities?

2018-04-23T12:05:06+02:00

Higher education graduates the world over are feeling the pinch once entering the job market after receiving their degrees. Often graduates find that their areas of expertise are somewhat too specialised, or impractical for real-world application. This is an undeniable problem that both universities, as well as academic communities, need to grasp. Is there a need for entrepreneurship courses or venture creation for young people in universities? And if so, how would organisations foster an academic programme to facilitate entrepreneurship?

Adapting To Society’s Needs

Entrepreneurship courses, or venture creation, are studies that are designed to assist and facilitate advancement toward a particular vocation and practical career for the student. In the modern age there is a severe lack of employment, so […]

Flying Without Fuel: Solar Impulse

Flying Without Fuel: Solar Impulse

On the 2nd of August, 2016, a plane touched down at an airport in Abu Dhabi. The same plane last took off from this particular airport in March 2015. Since then it has been flying around the world, one stretch at a time. It doesn’t sound too remarkable apart from the fact that this plane, the Solar Impulse Mk 2, made the trip without a drop of fuel.

The Solar Impulse 2 is powered by lithium polymer batteries which, in turn, are powered by over 17,000 solar panels mounted on the plane’s magnificent wingspan. The wingspan measures just over 70 meters, making the plane pretty imposing. However, it can only transport two people at a […]

Why The Rise In Student Protests Worldwide?

Why The Rise In Student Protests Worldwide?

This is a touchy subject, and is open to a number of contradicting viewpoints and ideas, but the fact remains that there is an increasing amount of student protest around the world, most notably in South Africa. The reasons for student protest around the globe vary, however, modern protest movements in South Africa and the United States are centred around exclusion or segregation of particular racial groups, or rising costs in studying at educational institutions.

Student Protest A Political Norm

Tertiary education, and the social structures associated with universities across the globe, have always been socio-economic and socio-political ‘flashpoints’. Enlightened youths have always been the first to identify and highlight political and social […]

Is Global Basic Income Possible?

Is Global Basic Income Possible?

There’s been a theory flying around the financial and economic world that may affect all of our futures and careers if practiced. It is called the Helicopter Money Theory, and it goes something like this; there’s a little town with a steadily growing population, and while the local money press keeps printing money, there are not enough notes to finance the town’s population’s demands. As the growing population requires more consumer goods (that manufacturers continue producing) the population is eventually starved of financing their habits. Rising inflation due to continued demand eventually prevents the people from spending money.

This ultimately results in manufacturers losing profit and raising prices to cover costs. The town is incapable […]

What’s Stopping International Students From Studying In SA?

What’s Stopping International Students From Studying In SA?

Any international student studying in South Africa will know just how difficult the journey was to actually be able to sit in a South African lecture room. As the most academically advanced country in the Sub-Saharan region, it comes as no surprise that our country attracts such a large gathering of youths desperate to attain a recognised degree from an internationally esteemed university. There are actually a number of benefits associated with hosting international students, as an increase of students from across the globe helps stretch an academic institution’s influence. But why is South Africa such an incredibly difficult country to study in if you are, indeed, from elsewhere in […]

Researchers Urgently Needed to Drive Innovation

The Faculty of Applied and Computer Science hosted its very first public lecture: “Growing the next generation of researchers: The National Research Foundation (NRF) perspective” on 21 June at the VUT auditorium 100. The guest speaker of the day was Dr Makobetsa Khati: Executive Director of the Research Chairs and Centres of Excellence (RCCE) directorate at NRF.

The topic was said to be articulated from the NRF’s vision for 2020 which encourages the renewal of the academic research enterprise and the absorptive capacity of Universities through critical engagements. The aim is to build a critical mass of skilled and capable researchers and create a more nuanced and focused funding instrument for bursaries and […]
