Next Intake Set for Even Greater Success

Thanks to the VUT/Sasol Entrepreneur Programme, the second cohort of enthusiastic entrepreneurs are ready and geared to begin. They are extremely excited about their excellent ideas that they hope will become the breathing ground to fertile business that they can implement. This became apparent during the stringent interviews that gave them entry into the programme.

The organising committee and lecturers resolved at a recent meeting that the programme will be restructured to enrich the curriculum, including the opportunity for the students to gain experimental training at the various industry and business sites. This will enhance their experience and award them a practical and deeper understanding of how business operates. Practical, hands-on training, […]

Creating An Outstanding Research Team

Creating An Outstanding Research Team

Plenty of postgraduate research requires teams of researchers. Often the case study is too large, or there is too much quantitative research to carry out, preventing the individual from doing the work on her/his own. However, there are often difficulties that arise as a result of working in research teams. Miscommunication, overlapping research, and disassociation between studies are some of the problems that occur when a research team works together. Creating a strong research team requires hard work and discipline among team members, but there are other ways of ensuring that the research team functions well.

Emotional Drive

Studies by a number of professors have revealed that an emotional element is required within a research […]

Food science has contributed to this scientific movement, as humans are producing cleaner, non-toxic and sustainable foods that are not only healthier but also easy to manufacture and tasty to boot. Here are […]

2027: The Year Of Sustainable Energy

2027 is the year in which fossil fuels become more expensive to harness as a source of energy and power, and wind power, as well as solar energy, will become the most economical choice for both public and private enterprises. This news is a welcoming death knell for the fossil fuel industry, which is the main cause of the tragic global warming phenomenon.

Renewable Investment

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s New Energy Outlook report, more than $11-billion investment will go towards generating new sources of power revenue, and that the vast majority of those funds will find their way toward fledgeling solar and wind power developments. The continuing investment in sustainable energy solutions has fast-tracked […]

Lengau: The Fastest Computer In Africa

There’s no animal on the planet faster than the cheetah. The cheetah can reach speeds of 120km an hour, the national speed limit on main roads in South Africa. Lengau means ‘cheetah’ in Setswana, a perfect reflection of speed and now the name of the fastest super-computer on the continent. Lengau doesn’t just reflect the computer’s speed but is also an embodiment of African  (and South African) pride.

What is the Lengau Super Computer

Lengau was built by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at its Centre for High-Performance Computing in Cape Town. Running at speeds of 1000 teraflops means that the computer leaves all other high-performance […]

Human Ageing and Pharmacology

 Human Ageing and Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the study of modern medicines and medical advances. Not known for much practical use, as most advancements are halted in their infancy or bear too great a cost to develop for mass use, pharmacology does have its benefits. The development of cutting-edge medical advancements owes the study of pharmacology for its very existence. One new development being made by the Buck Institute is a particularly good example.

Molecular Advances

Scientists and researchers at the Buck Institute in the USA (you can visit their website here) have been involved in biochemistry and pharmacology for many years, developing new and inventive ways of restricting the ageing process in humans. They have identified a particular molecule, […]

How To Be A Confident Researcher

Confidence is never really taught to any of us. It is always assumed that we know how to be confident. Before walking into an interview for a new position or walking into a test venue to write an exam, we’re always told by our peers and mentors “be confident”. Unfortunately, there is no easy way of becoming a more confident person. Confidence is definitely a result of years of morale-affecting circumstances and situations that either make a person more positive about a situation, and therefore more likely to expose these emotions to the people around them, or increasingly negative.

Our definition of confidence is that it is a positive mood development that occurs […]
